Honored to be part of the USA Exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Art this June. One of my photographs, Lotus Blossom, received an Award of Excellence. The work was taken at Lotusland’s Japanese Garden (Montecito, CA) on a cloudy morning; the blossom appeared in full color against a grey sky and drizzle. It is capturing those moments, which sometimes we are lucky to do.

Artist of the Month. June, 2024. Mon- Sat. 11 - 5pm, Sun. 11-2pm.
“Random Choice”
With the internet, we are living in a highly visual and interconnected world... a click, an image or swipe… Each of us has our own lived experience that influences how we see things. This exhibit is about spontaneity, letting colors, random choice and shapes define what you the viewer see. Are our choices pre-determined? Is the outcome random chance or pre-determined. You decide.
I started my artistic journey by painting local landscape scenes and still life in oil. My art, while still “from life”, has evolved to a more subjective phase with acrylic and multiple layers… letting color, expression and design define the mood and depth of emotion that one sees.
The show runs from June 4-28. I will be there Saturdays. Please email me if you’d like to meet at another time.

Jury Competition 2023
2nd Fridays Art is pleased to announce our annual juried exhibition Nip it in the Bud.
Nip it in the Bud is not just another way to spell Flower. This annual juried competition tickles the senses presenting work in multiple media from over thirty artists. Attend this exhibit and enter a metaphorically scented garden of floral perspectives. The concept of flower here runs from the abstract to the sublime with color, drama & layers of meaning.
Still Life: Matisse’s Table Revisited. Oil on board. 17in. x 14 in. (framed).
I’m honored to be included in “Nip It in the Bud”, a metaphorical garden of floral perspectives, at the Santa Barbara Tennis Club. With a colder than normal winter and heavy rains, it’s time for a breath of spring! “Matisse’s Table Revisted”, is a contemporary look at color and form, inspired by one of the great “Fauvist” masters of the early 20thc. Reception: Friday. March 10, 4:30 - 6:00pm. Please visit if you’re in town, it would be great to see you! Otherwise, visit my website. Details below. Warm regards, Katherine Murray-Morse

Artists prepare for
“Through the Lens” show
Feb 24, 2021
Artist Katherine Murray smiles alongside Carpinteria Arts Center volunteer Liz Rosedale and intern Emma Payne. Murray entered two pieces in the “Through the Lens” show, which opens virtually on Feb. 26. The show is set to open in-person once the county enters the red tier.
So pleased to be juried into this show, my 1st photography exhibit.
As a painter, I take many photos on location at the beginning, middle & end of a session - to capture the changing light, general markers and some colors. In the scene below, the artist in the foreground is painting the scene before him; I was able to capture that special moment along with a shot of the beach and atmospheric conditions on that hazy afternoon. Here “art imitates life imitates art.”

Santa Barbara Outdoors, Featured Artist, Gallery 113. January, 2021 - February, 2021
Just finished setting up Santa Barbara Outdoors at Gallery113! Santa Barbara is a place of beauty, with great vistas and beautiful beaches. During this challenging time, I have been inspired by the beauty of nature around us. The work in this exhibit was painted on location in Santa Barbara during Covid19, some at private spots, many finished in studio. I am pleased to share these special moments in time, where light, atmosphere and color influence and enlighten our mood. All works are oil on board, professionally framed in “floating” frames, wired for hanging.

Santa Barbara "Seen", Featured Artist, Gallery 113. September 29 - October 30, 2020
With the challenges we’ve faced over the past 6 months, the natural world has been a place of respite, calm and renewal, especially Santa Barbara, with its natural beauty. My works represent scenes from Santa Barbara - many painted on location during this time - to capture the light, atmosphere and changing colors unique to this locale and restorative properties found in the natural world. All works are oil on board or oil on canvas, and are framed. There are other fine artists exhibiting. Please visit the gallery!!
Gallery 113 is open from 2-5pm daily, (best to call ahead to check), located in the historic La Arcada near the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. Cape Cod Artist Shacks, Chatham and Fat Seagulls
September is a great time to visit Cape Cod, crowds are gone and weather is great. Delighted to find “HyArts” Artist shanties in Hyannis near the water, hotels and ferries to the islands - for artists and crafts. Rent for the week. Chatham is quintessential Cape Cod, wonderful views of the national seashore, with a hint of fall and not so many galleries. Sesuit Harbor Cafe at Sesuit Harbor (near Dennis) is a find, reminding me of the Cape many years ago with lobster rolls, outdoor picnic tables and overfed seagulls. Provincetown is an artists’ haunt, with wonderful galleries, exhibits (Provincetown Art Assoc and Museum), walking street, restaurants, historic town and friendly people at the outer tip of Cape Cod. Great energy. A must visit.
Japanese Peacock Scroll
Standing next to a family heirloom at the Santa Barbara Club, member’s art exhibition. The Japanese peacock was acquired by my great great grandmother Katharine Hequembourg in 1870’s while living in Japan. An educator, she was invited to help create a school in Yokahama and met her husband, Charles Flanders there. Later, it hung in their home in Chicago.
